As a result of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) However, following that I was witnessing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University 1971-75) and convinced that education should be one that integrates study of the arts and studies of other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist who has acquired an MA in 1967, and also earned a Ph.D. from UCLA. The ethnomusicology course was my first at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music in the College of Letters and Science. The possibility of pursuing multiple interests is something I really enjoy. Graduate students and undergraduates (for who I've written 3 textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) are enthused by my teaching. There are times when I engage in mainly academic pursuits in addition to periods of administrative tasks to my agenda (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies from 1999, and Chair of the Department of Music again).
